Measuring up for a marquee
- Measure the lawn you could use. Along the house first, then out from it, in metres. Leave out beds, paths and steps. A long stride is roughly a metre if you have no tape.
- Leave a metre clear all round. A marquee needs room round its edge to be pegged and tensioned. The planner leaves it for you, dashed on the plan.
- Check the slope. A gentle slope is usually fine; dips and steep ground need a look.
- Mark what's in the way. Add trees, a shed, beds or a washing line, and drag them where they are. Low branches, overhead cables and anything underground (pipes, cables, a drain) are checked at the site visit before any peg goes in.
- Think about the way in. The kit comes through a gate or a side passage, so note how wide it is.
